What’s all the fuss about doTERRA and Essential Oils?
OK, so maybe you started to hear about essential oils or doTERRA a few years ago and you thought, “ummm…thanks, but ‘being weird’ wasn’t really on my agenda for today”…and then you blinked, and BAM, now everyone and their Grandma’s dog is using essential oils. What in the world happened? And what is in the coolaid they are drinking?
Well, I hate to bust your pretty little non-weird bubble, but it seems like essential oils and various other “all natural remedies” are here to stay. I’ll do my best to break it down for you in the least offensive way possible, and in a way that feels like a no pressure welcome for you, because goodness knows someone has probably already tried to chase you down and oil you up – and for that, I’m truly sorry. (It was probably me. I can’t help myself. Especially all of the kids in the Chick-Fil-A play area…I’M SORRY, but they must be sprayed OnGuard. All of them. And the play equipment. If I’m sending my three babies in there, everyone is getting de-germed! Lord help you if you see me coming with a spray bottle.).
It was the spring of 2012 (I hope you are imagining me sitting on a rocking chair, telling you this quaint little story), and our precious baby boy (now 6) was just a few months old. He was wonderful and perfect in all ways, except for this poor skin. His skin was not so happy, and there were very few things that I had figured out to make it happy. To make a very long story short, I was exhausted, desperate and tired of “failing” as a mom (pause: can we as mom’s just go ahead and eliminate that word from our vocabulary? I mean really…. DELETE … We are just trying the best we can with what we have been given. That’s it. End of story. Another post for another day…) – so there is me, exhausted first time mom, sad and grieved by her son’s unforgiving skin. Enter doTERRA. A friend shared a blend with me that she had made. It was a 10ml glass roller made with fractionated coconut oil, Geranium, Melaleuca & Lavender essential oil. She had just started learning about essential oils, and offered them to me to try, out of love and support. (another pause: Can we as parents just take a moment and be thankful for other parents? Can we unite as desperate adults trying to all figure this out together? Can we give each other grace instead of judgement? Can we raise our kids together instead of looking for ways to cut each other down? I mean, doing this kiddo thing is hard enough, let’s not go about it alone. Un-Pause.)
So, I took this unfamiliar vile of “essential oils” (obviously witchcraft of some kind) and smiled and said thank you. I took it with me, and reluctantly used it on my young innocent child the next time his skin had a wicked eruption (one that was severe enough, obviously, that I would be desperate enough to venture into sorcery to help him), and guess what? Shockingly, it worked. It soothed his skin, and it worked quickly. Baffled, I quickly told my husband (you may have seen him around here, he’s the bearded doctor who wishes he could just hide in the mountains all day), and to my surprise he was not so surprised. I think his exact response went somewhat like this, “well, it’s not that shocking, I mean – the root of medicine was derived from plants, so it isn’t shocking at all that we would see therapeutic benefits from plants and nature”. Well, when you put it that way, then… “duh” seems like an appropriate response.
Essential Oils Work? Yes. Duh.
From there we kept learning, experimenting and growing in our knowledge of these odd little vials which soon grew to fill our home. It wasn’t long before we had essential oils diffusing in all of the rooms, and we had an oil for everything. Need to get sticky residue off of something? No worries, we had an oil for that. Sore throat and feeling bleh? Gotcha covered. Super glue your fingers together? (true story) Don’t worry, we have an oil for that.
Enough about us, do you still even know what an essential oil is? Or doTERRA? Why are there so many different oils? Why are there so many companies? What are the differences? Where do you even begin??
We’ve been using natural remedies and herbs for 10+ years, and we discovered doTERRA Essential Oils 5 years ago. They have been a game changer for us, in the most delightful way.
Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in plants. They are essential to the life of the plant and to the life of people on our planet. Plants are used in many different ways for helping and healing others, but the most concentrated way to use them is in the form of essential oils.
If you look at a magnified picture of a peppermint leaf, you will see the little sacs that contain the essential oil. Peppermint tea is traditionally used for stomach upset, seasonal discomfort, and respiratory support. 1 drop of peppermint essential oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea. Essential oils are 50-70 times more powerful than herbs. This potency and strength allows us to harness the properties of the plant even more powerfully.
